Living our values

Every holiday season, the UST team joins client retailers, business partners, and friends to sponsor a Breaking and Entering (“B&E”) Christmas event.

UST’s 2015 B&E focused on three projects:

  1. Gifting a Disney trip to a family with five-year-old twins from Columbia, SC that was displaced by historic flooding earlier this year.
  2. Painting and laying carpet for a children’s playroom at Mainstay, a women’s and children’s domestic violence shelter in Hendersonville, NC.
  3. Providing Christmas gifts to a lady and her two children who previously resided at the shelter and transitioned to independence.

The most meaningful gift this lady received was an airline trip to Micronesia to visit her mother, who is in poor health.

UST’s 2014 B&E included two events:

  1. Transforming one of UST’s Field Support Offices into a Christmas Village for women and children at the Mainstay domestic violence shelter, complete with decorations, stockings, crafts, snacks, horse-drawn carriage rides, a visit from Santa Claus, and gifts for each child and mother.
  2. Christmas for “Carol”, a formerly-abused mother who was solely supporting her child while attending school;

Carol received a laptop to continue her education, a bed and train set for her child, a washer and dryer, and a full year’s rent and bus fare.

The B&E mission is to reach out to families with children who are enduring challenging hardships and provide them with a memorable Christmas experience that would not otherwise be possible. In addition to planning and executing an enjoyable and family-focused annual event, UST attempts to address the difficulties that cause the families’ hardships by providing them with financial assistance and meeting other needs.

UST team members partner with non-profits, charities, and friends of each family to assess the family’s situation and needs, collect “Dear Santa” letters from the children, and generally collaborate to lead the family away from the home on the day of B&E so that UST can make the Christmas surprise a reality. The UST Team partners with client retailers, business partners, and friends to fundraise for the annual B&E and purchase Christmas decorations and gifts. Over the years, numerous Christmas dreams have come true through B&E. Past years have included furnishing a stay free hotel for St. Jude hospital, providing a new home for a sick elderly grandmother who was caring for her five grandchildren, and providing home repairs and assisting a family (that included a sick child) with paying their mortgage and other bills.
